Where’s my refund? How to track your tax return.
If you’ve already filed your tax return and you want to know when to the IRS will send your refund, there’s an easy way to find out.
The IRS’ Where’s my refund? tool will tell you when to expect your money.
It gives detailed refund status messages to taxpayers in “plain language,” the IRS said. The agency has made recent changes to the tool that should help taxpayers.
After you e-file your return, your refund status can usually be seen on the tool after about 24 hours or about four weeks after filing a paper return.
“Taxpayers should note that the IRS updates the tool once a day, usually overnight, so there’s no need to check more often,” the IRS said.
If the IRS needs additional information to process your return, the tool will tell you that, too, the agency said.
The fastest way to get a refund is by filing electronically and using direct deposit, it said. It usually takes about 21 days for a refund to be processed, though it will take even longer if your return needs corrections or extra review, it said.
To check on an amended return, use the Where’s My Amended Return? tool.
